Grassroots Washington works to restore the free and fair elections that are indispensable to political freedom by cleaning up the system and changing the broken status quo. Our actions will not encourage political party preferences, a re-vote, or the recall of elected officials. These issues are being dealt with in other arenas. But Grassroots Washington will work to:
convince the legislature to force implementation of existing federal and state laws and administrative rules,
impact the Governor’s Task Force on Elections, whose report is due March 1, 2005 [Goal Accomplished], and
push for election reforms prior to any potential re-vote.
Achieving our goal requires citizen involvement at many levels: attendance at legislative hearings and task force meetings; writing letters to the editor; talking with media, etc. Will you help us?
"Local U.S. Attorneys have the power to summon and conduct grand jury investigations under 28 USC 542. Don’t let local officials tell you they don’t have the power to investigate the 2004 election fiasco.” - Alex Bohler, EFF's Voter Integrity Project
*ACTION ITEM ALERT
Bob Williams of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation and Mike Siegel of KTTH are co-hosting two “Town Hall" meetings to address the current election fiasco and discuss ways to improve the election process in Washington State.
Bob and Mike will bring you up to date on the investigation of the 2004 elections and what must be done to fix the system. With the legislative session drawing to a close, now is a crucial time to make a united effort to bring real reforms to the election process.
These meetings are free and open to the public, so plan to attend with your family, friends and anyone interested in election reforms.

*ACTION ITEM ALERT The League of Women Voters has canceled their April 20 and May 3 town hall meetings.
Standing Action Items:
1. Write letters to your local newspaper editors. Get the ideas out there. Let people know you’re aware of what’s going on and you expect state officials to answer to citizens. Newspaper links
5. Consider making a financial contribution to EFF to support our defense of the rule of law.
Our message should be clear. We want the legislators to support real election reforms and:
Require that by December 30, 2005, the state conduct a 100% new registration with people required to register in their legal name and show proof of citizenship and a birth certificate. In war-torn Iraq, they were able to accomplish this in 45 days.
Require photo and signature Identification before a voter can vote.
Require state and local election officials to implement the 2002 Federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and the 2003 Legislative changes.
At a March 23, 2005, House Appropriations hearing on a bill to gut the voter-approved I-601 spending limit, Rep. Jim McIntire (D) asked a supporter of I-601’s two-third supermajority requirement for the legislature to raise taxes the following question:
"Can you name a time when we [legislators] have actually not just set it [supermajority requirement] aside by majority vote? I mean, this is in many respects a procedural motion that has no bearing. It’s a statutory constraint that cannot constrain any legislature that chooses as a majority to set it aside . . . have we ever used a supermajority [to raise taxes]?"
