Volunteer Observers Needed for Primary Election
EFF Action Alert
We need your help to ensure transparency and fairness in the upcoming primary! On the evening of September 13, 2005, the Evergreen Freedom Foundation will be hosting a training session on how to be an effective election observer.
You may have recently seen or heard about the new voter education advertisements being playing on television and radio. The ads, contracted for by the Secretary of State, present the image that all is well with our election system.
Unfortunately, every day there are new revelations showing how far we still have to go before integrity is restored to the ballot box. Elected officials have failed to make the necessary changes, so activists like you will have to be the catalyst for change.
We believe a very large part of this change starts at the polling places and ballot-counting centers, and thus we need volunteers to observe these places in the September King County primary to provide accountability for election officials.
What: Free training session for election observers
Who: Anyone concerned about our election system that is willing to observe the primary in King County, either at a polling location or the county ballot counting facilities.
When: September 13, 2005, 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
Where: Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Building 31, Room P106 (Whistler Room).
Bob Williams of EFF, Mike Siegel from KTTH, and Representative Toby Nixon will start off the evening by explaining the importance of your role as an observer. This will be followed by a short line-up of election experts who will give practical tips for being an effective observer including the legal boundaries, what to look for, and how to report any problems you observe.
Participants will be given a packet of information to take with them. If you are interested in being an observer but cannot attend the training session, this packet will be available online the day after the session (September 14).
If you would like to attend or need more information, please contact EFF by phone at (360) 956-3482 or send your name, telephone number, and address by email to Marie Giger.
This event is co-sponsored by EFF and the Microsoft Political Action Committee.
Directions: From the intersection of I-405 and SR-520 in Bellevue, head east on SR-520 toward Redmond. Take the third exit (NE 40th St / NE 51st St), and bear right at the fork in the off-ramp toward NE 40th St. Turn right on NE 40th St, and get in the middle lane. Go to the third street on the right (163rd Ave NE), and turn right. The entrance to parking for building 31 is the second left. The best access to room P106 is from the underground parking garage.
