EFF's Labor Policy Center exists to expand worker freedom and advance limited government by advocating for the First Amendment rights of union members.

Public employee unions, particularly teacher unions, are sheltered from the corrective actions of market forces. On the income side, union money does not come from satisfied customers; it is generated from union dues forcibly collected from employees. In most cases, unions are protected from competition for customers.

This combination results in

  • Lack of accountability to members;
  • Diminished quality of services;
  • Costly services; and
  • Extravagant self-serving expenditures.

Union expenditures are also a problem. Union officials can and do overcharge for the services they render, and the generous excess is spent on politics of union officials' choosing. Employees have little or no say. This violates employees' constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech.
